Liverpool and Chelsea triumph

It was a winning night for Barclays Premier League sides Liverpool and Chelsea in the Champions League.

Steven Gerrard ensured Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to the best possible start with both goals in a 2-1 win at Marseille.

Liverpool are also paired with PSV and Atletico Madrid in Group D so manager Rafa Benitez will be delighted to have seen them open up with a victory at the Stade Velodrome.

Marseille actually took the lead through a fine goal from Lorik Cana in the 23rd minute but Gerrard curled home a sensational equaliser three minutes later before putting the Reds ahead from the penalty spot just after the half-hour mark.

And the Reds were unfortunate not to add a third in the second half, Ryan Babel particularly unlucky, as they dominated proceedings in France.

Frank Lampard opened the scoring as Chelsea began their Champions League campaign with an emphatic 4-0 home win over Bordeaux in Group A. England star Lampard headed home early on while Joe Cole, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka were all on target in a comfortable victory for the Blues at Stamford Bridge.
